ABOUT

Lives and works in İstanbul.
Serpil Kantaş focuses on human nature and the existence practices and the thought structures that society imposes on the individual. She offers to question the social norms and the reality conveyed by the beliefs; tales; social relationships
The human figures, the focus of the artist’s visual narratives, seem to be taken away from their home and tossed into an alien world and time. These serene figures, used as an interface to the moment of awareness, appear to have no apparent social identity, sex, nationality, era, etc. While the space in her paintings builds a psychological atmosphere that serves this internal moment.
In her works, the variations of reality is embodied by the emphasized collage effects, multilayered thin paint, blank spots, partially deformed figures, and thick paint touches which may serve to destruct the painting itself, as an aesthetic language.
She analyses the contradictions in human nature like construction vs. destruction, good vs. evil, on the basis of her own expressive artistic manner.
